Before you trace a wire, read the legend
Before you trace one wire, read the legend, the title block, and the sheet index. The print set tells you what its symbols mean, which revision you're holding, and where every circuit lives — if you orient before you dive in.
A faultline101 training module · the skill behind six hands-on scenarios
The legend first: symbols and how the set is organized
Before you trace one wire, read the legend, title block, and sheet index — so you never trace the wrong revision with the wrong symbol meanings.
The idea
A print set is a language, and every set speaks a slightly different dialect. The legend defines what each symbol means on THIS drawing — and symbol standards vary between vendors, eras, and countries. Reading a symbol from memory is how you misdiagnose a normally-closed contact as normally-open.
The title block tells you what you're holding: the machine, the drawing number, and — critically — the revision. Troubleshooting from a superseded revision is troubleshooting a machine that no longer exists. Confirm you have the current, as-built set before you trust a single line.
The sheet index and cross-sheet references are the map. A control circuit that starts on sheet 3 continues on sheet 7; the references tell you where. Orient on the whole set first — legend, title block, index — and every trace after gets faster and safer.
Six faults you'll work in this module
You don't learn this by reading it — you learn it by doing it on six different faults, each drilling the same skill until it's instinct:
- Strange plant, strange symbols. The legend just saved you a wrong turn.
- Which machine are you looking at?. Trace the current revision, never a superseded one.
- Where does this circuit live?. Circuits span sheets — follow the cross-references.
- A symbol you don't know. One legend lookup, the right device.
- Your memory used the wrong dialect. Let the legend define the symbols, not your memory.
- Orient, then locate. Orientation is the cheapest insurance in troubleshooting.
The mistakes it kills
- Reading a symbol from memory instead of the legend, on a set that uses a different standard
- Troubleshooting from a superseded revision instead of the current as-built
- Hunting page by page instead of using the sheet index and cross-references
Why it matters: Two minutes orienting on the legend, title block, and index saves you from tracing the wrong revision with the wrong symbol meanings — the kind of mistake that burns a whole shift.
Reading about it is one thing. Doing it under pressure is another.
faultline101 drops you into a running machine with the real evidence in front of you, and the readings respond to your choices — exactly like a real callout, on equipment you can't break. This is one of 35 modules and 210 scenarios in the trainer.
